Student Legal Services
Student Legal Services (SLS), established in 1973, provides legal advice and representation to eligible students at West Virginia University. SLS is available to educate students about their legal rights and responsibilities and to provide services to all students with legal matters including leases, contracts, landlord/tenant issues and consumer problems. We can only provide advice in criminal matters but not representation. SLS provides referrals for cases that they choose not to handle directly. Please take a look at our Laws and Forms for information on state and municipal ordinances, brochures, and general information.
Currently, SLS is staffed by a full-time lawyer, Carrie Showalter; two law clerks from the College of Law at West Virginia University; and a full-time legal secretary.
SLS is available to educate students about their legal rights, responsibilities, and obligations. We provide services to all students with legal issues including, but not limited to, the following areas of law: leases, contracts, landlord/tenant issues, consumer issues, notary services, insurance matters, wills and powers of attorney, debt collection, expungement of criminal records, employment grievances, family law and domestic matters, and general civil matters.
In most cases, it is necessary to make an appointment. Students are encouraged to contact our office as soon as a legal issue arises in order to receive timely assistance. To schedule an appointment, contact Student Legal Services today at 304-293-4897. Beginning in August 2015, we can accommodate walk-ins on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:45 to 7 PM in our office, located in G-5 Elizabeth Moore Hall.
SLS is committed to providing the students at West Virginia University with the best legal services possible. To ensure that we are providing the best services, we ask our clients to fill out a client satisfaction survey once their case has been closed. This survey allows us insight into our clients’ needs and overall approval of the services we have provided.
Student Legal Services also provides a mediation service for WVU students. This service provides disputants with a neutral third party, a mediator, to help resolve disputes in a reasonable manner. Students who are interested in student mediation should visit the WVU Student Mediation Services page and/or contact Student Legal Services.
If you would like someone from this office to do an educational presentation, please contact Carrie Showalter at firstname.lastname@example.org.
