Betty Boyd Loans

The Betty Boyd Loan was established in memory of former Dean Betty Boyd to help students facing a financial crisis. The loan is available in an amount not to exceed $300.00.

Students should contact Campus and Community Life for assistance at (304) 293-5611. To be eligible for the Betty Boyd Loan, students must complete an application and make an agreement for repayment of the loan.

Alice E. “Betty” Boyd was born April 10, 1922, in Brooklyn, New York. She received a bachelor’s degree from WVU in speech and pre-medicine in 1942. Betty Boyd served West Virginia University for almost four decades. She was Director of the YWCA and YMCA from 1948 – 1952; Assistant Dean of Women, 1952 – 1955; Dean of Women, 1955 – 1968; Associate Dean of Student Educational Services, 1968 – 1980; and Dean of Student Life, 1980 – 1987.

She received numerous awards during her lifetime, including the Mary Catherine Buswell Award for outstanding contributions to West Virginia University women; Most Loyal Mountaineer; the Order of Vandalia for unselfish dedication to WVU; and the West Virginia Association of Student Personnel Administrators Distinguished Service Award. She was also inducted into Mountain, a student honorary, and Mortar Board’s honorary alumni chapter.

When WVU celebrated the centenial of co-education, a Women’s Centenary calendar was dedicated to Betty Boyd, “who made history at WVU and makes WVU proud of its history.”
